Born: Venice, 26 November 1940

Education: Degree in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Padua (Since 1980, he has been associate professor of general chemistry at the University of Venice).

Career:

Joined the Italian Socialist Party in 1960 and belonged to it until its disappearance in 1994.

1962-64: National Chairman of the UGI (Italian University Students Union).

Elected to Venice City Council in 1964 (head of urban development in 1969).

Named to the Executive Committee of the Italian Socialist Party in 1976.

Elected to Italian Parliament in 1976 and re-elected consecutively through 1994.

1980-83: Minister of State Participation.

1983-87: Minister of Labour and Social Security; Inner Cabinet Member of the government of Prime Minister Bettino Craxi.

1984-92: President of Aspen Institute Italia.

1987-88: Chairman of the Socialist Parliament Group;

1988-89: Deputy Prime Minister of Italy.

1989-92: Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy.

Since 1994, he has consulted for Italian companies in the Middle and Far East; in 1999, the consultancies were extended to cover the Balkan nations.

Elected National Chairman of Socialist Party, 1997.

Named president of IPALMO, 2002.

Named member of the European ASEM Task Force, 2003.

Elected member of the European Parliament, 2004.
